milan design market is a project created by blank, a creative agency based in milan. it’s a space dedicated to emerging designers and brands, who can exhibit and sell their creations, but also network and develop new business opportunities during milan design week.
2018 is the third edition of milan design market during milan design week. also this year will be one of the main events of isola design district and will be organized within the beautiful loft of 400 sqm, in the courtyard of via pastrengo 14.
many new features await you, starting with a pop-up concept store, where visitors can discover and buy products of emerging international designers, handpicked between more than 1.000 applications. in addition, there will be 5 areas dedicated to italian startups and design studios, with a total of almost 100 projects displayed, between interior design and furnishing accessories.
the setting up of the space will be managed by the creative director elif reşitoğlu, with the aim of creating ‘imaginary landscapes’. you will then be involved into architectural environments designed by the dutch architect sven jansse and printed on a 1:1 scale, which will be scenography of the exhibition.
beside the exhibition there will be a design bar set up by the experimental designer federica cristaudo and managed in collaboration with birrificio la ribalta and ink eat, as well as daily dj sets and events, mostly during the happy hour (18: 00/21:00).
the idea was very simple: a space where emerging designers and brands could exhibit and sell their creations during milan design week, even with a low budget; a space where they could network and develop new business opportunities.
last edition of mdm was hosted by a beautiful 400 square meters loft, where 35 designers came to showcase their products from all over the world, meeting around 13.000 visitors. soon mdm will be also an online platform where designers can have visibility and sell their products through an e-shop.
the tasty side of design.

a space in which the experiential journey created by artist carlo bernardini, through a specific study of optical fibers that draw light shapes, brings the visitors to discover the energy of the new hyundai kona, first compact suv available also in full electric version, and the concept kite, electric dune buggy made by students of turin based ied’s master in transportation design with the support of hyundai’s european design center.
walking through the light installation, visitors will be brought in a dimension permeated by pure energy, that shows itself in geometries and perspective games crated by luminous optical fiber in the dark.
in bernardini’s works in fact, light is mediated by the use of optical fiber, which the artist uses since 1996, and with which he creates sensational effects of geometries and spaces that multiply the possibilities of vision and perception of the spectator, who finds himself inside the installation having the impression of being in front of a different artwork for each point of observation.
in a journey in which touch and hearing are also engaged, in addition to sight, “energy zone by hyundai” visitors enter a dimension where emptiness and darkness are the true substance, and where light becomes a mean to mold space, forcing them to use their imagination to see (or not to see) an invisible dimension.

lindsey adelman partners with calico wallpaper to present a joint installation of new lighting collection, drop system, alongside their debut of oceania. entitled beyond the deep, the multi-room presentation explores the effect of naturally occurring chemical reactions on surfaces and will immerse viewers into a dreamy world of alchemy and decay.
drop system, inspired by rows of bare bulbs in nyc subway tunnels and mondrian’s broadway boogie woogie, is comprised of brass tubing and handblown mini globes. lindsey challenged herself to be reductive in the number of unique elements such as straight lines and circles, to achieve the optimum number of potential configurations and range of aesthetic directions. drop system can be customized as a minimalist, spare configuration or accumulate to become a more opulent, drippy organic composition.
this exhibition will also show the next iteration of liminal collection, which was debuted at design miami in 2017 in an installation entitled “the edge of what we know.” this collection is intentionally “off menu” and much more sculptural in nature. each mobile-like assembly is a one-off piece characterized by a spontaneous and raw sensibility.

to celebrate its 25th anniversary, surface magazine is teaming up with david rockwell to explore american design now by reinterpreting a u.s. icon. aptly called the diner, the experience will take place during salone del mobile and offer a place where strangers become a community, where causal yet intimate encounters occur, and where cultural differences are celebrated. david rockwell and the lab at rockwell group are designing four distinct environments—the roadside diner, the east coast luncheonette, the midwest diner, and the west coast diner.
to round out the diner, surface is tapping additional emerging and established american designers and firms, including the renowned design studio 2×4, which is creating the project’s visual identity.
during the day, the immersive eatery and lounge will offer a contemporary take on quintessentially american food and drink, and feature a conversation series and other programming; at night, the space will transform into a nightclub featuring performances and parties.
