Alessi: not just in your kitchen.

You know Alessi for their gorgeous kitchen tools and tableware, but I’ll bet you’re not as familiar with their line of watches, designed by the likes of Karim Rashid, Achille Castiglioni and SANAA, among others. They offer some classy aluminum and leather varieties, but I like Rashid’s happy-looking polyurethane model, Kaj (above).

I’ve noticed a trend towards brighter, almost childlike accessories for designers in the last few years. Go to any design conference and you can’t help but notice the sea of black and white clothing is punctuated by glasses and watches that are not only unique, they scream I AM UNIQUE from across the room. Pink lucite glasses and a watch made from neon rubber are the designer’s calling card. Not that there’s anything wrong with that – bring on the fun eyewear! And, from Alessi, the fun wrist wear. Report from nyigf 2012: neo-utility.

With almost 3,000 exhibitors, its easy to get overwhelmed at the annual NYIGF, a convention debuting new kitchen gadgets, home goods and children’s products. But neo-utility‘s booth always manages to capture my attention. Representing brands that are both playful and grown up, neo-utility brings thoughtful, well-made design to the work and play space with companies like ANYTHING, IDEA International, Miller Goodman and Very Good & Proper. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect to see.

ANYTHING (pictured above) is a collaboration between UK designer Michael Sodeau and Japanese company Suikosha. Together they produce colorful, minimal desk accessories.

IDEA International is a Japanese company representing the designers that made the now famous Music Balloon, the Icon Watch and to:ca, the wooden LED clock.

Miller Goodman makes children’s toys so beautiful you wish you were a kid again. But there’s really no shame in having a set of handmade, wooden blocks on your work desk.

Very Good & Proper is on a “mission to create practical, beautiful and reasonably priced products that last a long time.” Their tables and and stackable chairs will soon be available for purchase online.

Stitch chair.

Stitch was selected as a Best design in the concepts category of the 2004 American International Design Review. Now we learn Cappellini has put it into production.

Fun folding chair completely manufactured with aluminum plate. Polished lacquer in white, blue, yellow, grey, red and black colors or in a multi-colored version in a fixed combination of the same colors. Feet in white polypropylene. Stitch Chair is a new typology of product for Cappellini and allows, thanks to its hinges, to have a chair that can fold up. Comes with personalized cardboard packaging.
