It’s only the beginning of February and already Alessi is killing it with their (Spring/Summer) 2012 collection. Last week I was impressed by Marcel Wanders’ “Dressed” collection and this week I’m digging Giulio Iacchetti’s “Ape” aperitivo set. Alessi specialized in cocktail products in the 50s and Iacchetti’s design is a clear callback to those days. Designed to be used either in the home or restaurant/bar, the set includes a bowl and spoon for mixed nuts, a container for olives, a toothpick holder, a bowl for chips, a wooden cheese board and a dish for discarded toothpicks and olive pits.

“Three little inventions have been added to the family: a self standing cocktail stick holder, which can also be inserted in the olive bowl if desired, a teaspoon with a special cavity for picking up peanuts, and a steel container with lid for concealing little bits of rubbish from view.”

I love how Iacchetti has used the same stainless steel form for both the dish stem/base and the toothpick holder, so the entire set takes on the dynamic of landscape with varying heights and materials.

how the new site stacks up.

click > enlarge

Earlier this week it was announced that the Design Museum, currently located in east London, would relocate in 2014 to a site at the Commonwealth Institute. Chances are you’ve caught a whiff of the buzz already. Here’s how the renovation adds up:

Number of years the site stood vacant: 12
Interior design: John Pawson
Why you should know him: Recently he’s done stage design for major ballets and operas as well as a temporary exhibition in the Geometric Staircase of St. Paul’s Cathedral. See all his work.
Number of floors: 5
Square-meters: 10,000 (about 33 square-feet)
Height of peaked roof: 16 meters (about 55 feet)
Estimated annual visitors: 500,000 (double the previous amount)
Estimated cost: £80 million (about $126 million)

“It’s a true icon and example of post war modernism,” Pawson said. ”The challenge was working inside the skin of an existing building. For me it’s about retuning the existing architecture so it still feels fresh. The palette we’ll use is quite quiet and simple…and will retain and enhance the extraordinary special qualities of the building.”

moka alessi | alfonso mendini | click > enlarge

Only a glimpse of the Spring/Summer 2012 line and our focus ( not Alessi’s ) will be the theme of duality. Let’s start with “old and new” via the “Moka Alessi” by architect Alessandro Mendini’s homage to Alberto Alessi’s maternal grandfather, Alfonso Bialetti, creator of the indispensable Bialetti Moka Express that is a mainstay in many Italian kitchens. [ bialetti moka express ]

all-time | guido venturini

‘All-time’ represents both “formal and casual” with minimal flowing smooth classic lines but designed for daily use and includes all the basic elements of flatware, bone china, and glasses. A re-design of the “Pluto” collection designed by Guido Venturini.”I immediately knew I didn’t want to do anything too different. I’ve got a strong bond with the formal style – for me, it’s a real necessity. The language of shapes has its own priorities, and it draws me into it in a way that I can only control up to a certain point.”

is01 | inga sempé \ 2012

This spoon serves up both “Italy and France” and designed for a competition organized with the magazine “Domus” to celebrate the anniversary of the “Cucchiaio d’Argento” (in English “Silver Spoon”) – the historic recipe book with its 12,000 recipes and as a star of Italian kitchens for the past 50 years. For this special occasion five international designers were asked to come up with a new serving spoon. The winner, Inga Sempé, for her ability to design a very simple, rigorous and yet highly expressive tool which, thanks to its precise details, well fulfills the practical need to gather up and serve risotto. France? The designer is of course French.
Finally, someone has taken their designer hands to the ugliest thing in my bathroom: the toilet plunger. You might have seen Josh Owen‘s new WC Line at Accent on Design at NYIGF last week as part of Kontextur, the go-to source for all those seeking a sleeker, more refined bathroom. Owen’s three-part WC series includes a waste bin, toilet brush and plunger. The former has a handy wooden dowel attached to lid to keep your used tissues from being an eyesore, and the plunger and brush are hidden from view in a clever little rubber container.

“These products exude clarity by blending utility, usability, materiality and engineering with careful attention to the concerns of space limitations often accompanying their context in the bath.”

“compas” chair | click > enlarge

First previewed at Silvera-Université, the prototype of the Compas chair shows the continuing collaboration and affinity between Patrick Norguet and Kristalia which began in 2011 with the “Poule” occasional table and the “Degree” stool/storage henceforth available to the public. The definitive version of Compas will be presented at the Milan Fair in April.

[ "compas" chair ]
“Compas” is a timeless tribute to contemporary furniture conceived in the forties on the principle of fluidity and comfort. Here Patrick Norguet uses current technical possibilities to the full to refine the lines in order to achieve a chair which is both welcoming and stackable, for use inside and out. The seat and the back are polypropylene and the feet are epoxy lacquer die cast aluminum.

poule occasional table

[ poule occasional table ]
The Poule table has a light and cheeky soul, first of all because of its name, a veiled reference to chicken legs of which the base recalls the shape, but it is above all functional: produced with drawn wire aluminum and die cast aluminum elements with its constant and recyclable qualities.

It folds and is available in two heights, with a black or white epoxy lacquer, for outside use, and its laminated top is offered in two versions: round or square. Poule will be available from the end of April 2012.

degree stool/storage

[ degree stool/storage ]
Is it a pop sculpture, a scenographic element or an enormous cork? No, it’s Degree a veiled reference to the British qualification and its unique hat. Presented last year as a prototype at the “Salone del Mobile” in Milan, it is currently available in two versions: in either black or white polypropylene, with or without cork cladding. Versatile and amusing, it is a coffee table which also acts as a small piece of furniture for storage. Degree is available from mid-March 2012.

Ceci n’est pas une rêverie (This is not a dream) is both a retrospective and a reexamination of the architectural concepts of Stanley Tigerman. Throughout the exhibition, Tigerman’s texts, sketches, cartoons, object designs, architectural drawings, and models are organized in relation to nine themes that single out certain leitmotifs of his thought since 1960: Utopia, Allegory, Humor, Death, Division, (Dis)Order, Identity, Yaleiana, and Drift. Evident in this work is Tigerman’s insistence on the transitory nature of architectural interpretations and on the spiritual and ethical value of ambivalence. The installation spreading through all three floors of the Graham Foundation’s Madlener House builds on the playful, oneiric, and surrealist undercurrent of Tigerman’s work and underscores the abiding importance of his approach.

A Chicago native and principal in the architectural and design firm of Tigerman McCurry, Stanley Tigerman (b. 1930) has undertaken nearly 400 projects, resulting in more than 175 built works. Tigerman trained in some of Chicago’s top firms from 1949 until 1959 including the office of Keck & Keck, Milton Schwartz, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and Harry Weese. Following his graduation from Yale University, where he received both his BArch (1960) and MArch (1961) under the leadership of Paul Rudolph, Tigerman established his own firm, working with several partners, before founding Tigerman McCurry Architects in 1986 with his wife Margaret McCurry. Tigerman is the author of seven books includingThe Chicago Tribune Tower Competition and Late Entries (1980); Versus: An American Architect’s Alternatives (1982); The California Condition: A Pregnant Architecture (1982); The Architecture of Exile (1988); Stanley Tigerman: Buildings and Projects 1966-1989 (1989); Schlepping through Ambivalence(2011); his autobiography Designing Bridges to Burn (2011), and he has edited numerous others. In addition to being chosen as was one of the architects to represent the United States at the 1976 and 1980 Venice Biennales, the work of Tigerman’s firm has been exhibited in major galleries and art museums around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. [ tigerman mccurry ] [ chicago reader ] [ hungry for events? > shared practice ]

our Internet personalities have evolved into amplified personas that aren’t truly us.

New Year’s day may have come and gone but it’s still early enough in 2012 to set forth a few more predictions before the year really gets underway. The latest prophecy comes from the tech experts at Frog, who have foreseen a future that includes biomimicry, a smarter use for Facebook and better mobile phones for the rest of the world. [via Fast Co.]

12. Connected Cities

People can learn about and even experience a place before ever setting foot in it. Our Austin studio recently hired a creative director from Brooklyn who used the fly-through experience in Google maps to get a feel for a neighborhood where he was home shopping. As this mountain of data becomes more accessible, we will find ourselves more connected with information, with each other, and with the city that surrounds us.

11. Taking Computers Out of Computing

Voice recognition technology has finally hit its tipping point of capability, and the stage is being set for a generation of users to start assuming voice control, just as touch control is now assumed for any screen. But the spoken word is only a fragment of any conversation. Computer vision–especially depth-sensing cameras–will be able to pick up nonverbal cues such as gesturing or body language that complete human communication. When voice and gesture comprehension are paired, humans will be able to address technology naturally, without command jargon. The tactical steps being taken in 2012 are to “design the human” as the primary interface device in support of that.

10. The Reductive Social Network: Technology Finally Gets Personal

Our Internet personalities have evolved into amplified personas that aren’t truly us. The current fervor around cloud computing only exacerbates the problem: Now, my 10,000 digital photos are in the ether, but am I any more emotionally connected with them and sharing them with my three closest friends in a meaningful way? This is about culling from the terabytes and sharing with the single digits. In 2012, product companies will deliver new products that begin narrowing the social circle and capturing intimacy and authenticity.

9. Gadget Convergence Will Lead to Specialization

I read countless blog posts proclaiming that dedicated devices, like the camera and the watch, will rapidly shrivel and die. Instead, I think new technologies will provide opportunities for them to get better. When users purchase a dedicated device, they are gravitating towards products with higher quality and better design to elevate their experience. It turns out that the convergent device is killing the commodity digital product while forcing everything else to improve. This is presenting companies and brands with an opportunity to do what designers love: Make things better!

8. Rein in the Clouds!

We’re rapidly moving into a technology space where mobility is becoming less about a set of devices and more about the pervasive mist of data that we all generate with every interaction on the Internet. Managing, securing, and understanding this data will play a huge part in technology over the next few years. Moreover, making that data comprehensible to the consumer is key. The question has never really been, Is this possible? but rather, When will we have an ecosystem of compelling and useful devices and services that will integrate seamlessly into people’s lives? We think that time is finally arriving in 2012.

7. Reputation-Enhanced Lending and Trading Goes Mainstream

While logging in to third-party websites using your Facebook identity is now commonplace, we are beginning to see person-to-person exchanges making use of social networks to broker trust. For example, before you stay at someone’s spare bedroom via Airbnb, you have to sign in with your profile. I recently rented someone’s house in Toronto for a few days, and between our respective social networks, we found enough friends, relatives, and colleagues in common for him to lend me the property with confidence. In 2012, this reputation-enhanced lending and trading will become mainstream. We will lease, barter, and trade with relative strangers, banking on their reputations and connections.

Stay tuned for part 2. In the meantime, let us know your 2012 predictions in the comments.
