The Leaf House takes the mobile home to a whole new level of nomadic living. Named after the well known Leaf House on Hornby Island in Canada where 28-year-old builder and aspiring designer Laird Herbert spent his summers as a child, Leaf House is now famous for being the first of many small, portable homes Herbert hopes to build and sell. The Leaf House pictured here is the second one he built while he lived in another in the Yukon. Herbert designed and built this 160-square-foot version to withstand extreme winter climates. The features include:

Herbert built it over the course of five months for $40,000, but he’s only asking $44,500 for it. If you’ve ever considered a Winnebago but couldn’t bear the design or wanted an Airstream but couldn’t afford the price, now’s your chance to take your life on road and stay snug and warm, even in the Yukon.

Best of milan 2012: park life, by jasper morrison for kettal.

It took designer Jasper Morrison four and a half years to perfect his new line of outdoor furniture for Kettal. The stackable tables, chairs, a sofa and lounger were made especially lightweight to make moving them into winter storage as easy as possible. The collection was shown as part of Kettal’s display at Salone del Mobile in Milan, along with pieces by their other designers, like Patricia Urquila.

Apparently, it took Morrison almost five years to design the collection because he spent much of the time researching outdoor furniture products, analyzing standard codes and testing materials for durability. I like his clean, streamlined collection because it reminds me of the simple, well-made, modern patio furniture my grandparents had in their backyard. Like Park Life, those pieces were built to last. In fact, many of those pieces currently furnish the pool area at my cousin’s home. That kind of generational lifespan is one of Kettal’s biggest selling points – along with considered design, of course. Morrison took ergonomics seriously in his approach to make leisurely summer afternoons as comfortable as they ought to be.

Like sophisticated Transformers, these products fold to save space and to reveal a new function. The Flatterware cup body is molded out of a single piece of flexible plastic, with a helical structure allowing it to spring open and close with ease.

Just give it a simple twist, the bright plastic disc turns into an eco-friendly mini-tumbler. The bottom of the cup sits in the hard lower part and sort of grows out of the base, creating an easy-to-grip glass with a hard rim (great for spillers). It definitely has a rubber-plastic whiff to it initially, but that should be no problem since this 12-ounce travel companion is dishwasher-safe—you also have to wash it in hot water before use to “activate the cup’s spring memory” and help dissipate the smell.

The rim of the cup is very rigid, keeping any spills from happening. The helix design gives two benefits, one being it twists back down into the base with a smooth feel and clicks shut easily, the other being it stabilizes the cup so you do not have to grip it gently to avoid spills. At 12 ounces it is a large travel cup! Flatterware collapsible cup, $5 USD.
