COMMON pitch: business + social innovation.

On February 29th, COMMON and Design Indaba will host COMMON Pitch: “A Party To Fix the World” in Cape Town, South Africa. Ten entrepreneurs will have five minutes to deliver the pitch of a lifetime to a live and virtual audience at City Hall in Cape Town.

The entry deadline closed a few days ago, and now judges begin the task of whittling down the contestant pool to those with the most innovative concepts for social enterprise. The winner will walk with a team of supporters, mentors and $25,000 to start their business.

But Cape Town is far. If you’re in NY, check out COMMON Pitch NYC at Brooklyn Bowl on February 15th.

COMMON Pitch NYC will look towards the next generation of consumption by asking one important question: What if there’s already enough to go around? Featuring the creative new business concepts of eight hand-picked, competing entrepreneurs, this pitch-meets-party will spotlight some of today’s most exciting new social technologies for borrowing, sharing or trading the things we all need.

The Architecture & Design Society and Chicago Women in Architecture present Yolande Daniels of Studio SUMO: “Architecture Works”. Yolande Daniels is principal and founding partner of Studio SUMO, a cross-disciplinary architecture studio based in New York. Studio SUMO has been the recipient of numerous awards and was recently featured in the Architectural League of NY Emerging Voices series and the Design Vanguard issue of Architectural Record for projects including the Mizuta Museum of Art in Sakado, Japan (2011) and the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts in Brooklyn (2006). Daniels received architecture degrees from the City College of New York and Columbia University. She was a recipient of the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome and a Helena Rubinstein Critical Studies Fellowship from the Whitney American Museum of Art and currently holds the 2011–2012 Silcott Endowed Chair at Howard University. First previewed at Silvera-Université, the prototype of the Compas chair shows the continuing collaboration and affinity between Patrick Norguet and Kristalia which began in 2011 with the “Poule” occasional table and the “Degree” stool/storage henceforth available to the public. The definitive version of Compas will be presented at the Milan Fair in April.

“Compas” is a timeless tribute to contemporary furniture conceived in the forties on the principle of fluidity and comfort. Here Patrick Norguet uses current technical possibilities to the full to refine the lines in order to achieve a chair which is both welcoming and stackable, for use inside and out. The seat and the back are polypropylene and the feet are epoxy lacquer die cast aluminum.

The Poule table has a light and cheeky soul, first of all because of its name, a veiled reference to chicken legs of which the base recalls the shape, but it is above all functional: produced with drawn wire aluminum and die cast aluminum elements with its constant and recyclable qualities.

It folds and is available in two heights, with a black or white epoxy lacquer, for outside use, and its laminated top is offered in two versions: round or square. Poule will be available from the end of April 2012.

Is it a pop sculpture, a scenographic element or an enormous cork? No, it’s Degree a veiled reference to the British qualification and its unique hat. Presented last year as a prototype at the “Salone del Mobile” in Milan, it is currently available in two versions: in either black or white polypropylene, with or without cork cladding. Versatile and amusing, it is a coffee table which also acts as a small piece of furniture for storage. Degree is available from mid-March 2012.

Ceci n’est pas une rêverie (This is not a dream) is both a retrospective and a reexamination of the architectural concepts of Stanley Tigerman. Throughout the exhibition, Tigerman’s texts, sketches, cartoons, object designs, architectural drawings, and models are organized in relation to nine themes that single out certain leitmotifs of his thought since 1960: Utopia, Allegory, Humor, Death, Division, (Dis)Order, Identity, Yaleiana, and Drift. Evident in this work is Tigerman’s insistence on the transitory nature of architectural interpretations and on the spiritual and ethical value of ambivalence. The installation spreading through all three floors of the Graham Foundation’s Madlener House builds on the playful, oneiric, and surrealist undercurrent of Tigerman’s work and underscores the abiding importance of his approach.

A Chicago native and principal in the architectural and design firm of Tigerman McCurry, Stanley Tigerman (b. 1930) has undertaken nearly 400 projects, resulting in more than 175 built works. Tigerman trained in some of Chicago’s top firms from 1949 until 1959 including the office of Keck & Keck, Milton Schwartz, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and Harry Weese. Following his graduation from Yale University, where he received both his BArch (1960) and MArch (1961) under the leadership of Paul Rudolph, Tigerman established his own firm, working with several partners, before founding Tigerman McCurry Architects in 1986 with his wife Margaret McCurry. Tigerman is the author of seven books includingThe Chicago Tribune Tower Competition and Late Entries (1980); Versus: An American Architect’s Alternatives (1982); The California Condition: A Pregnant Architecture (1982); The Architecture of Exile (1988); Stanley Tigerman: Buildings and Projects 1966-1989 (1989); Schlepping through Ambivalence(2011); his autobiography Designing Bridges to Burn (2011), and he has edited numerous others. In addition to being chosen as was one of the architects to represent the United States at the 1976 and 1980 Venice Biennales, the work of Tigerman’s firm has been exhibited in major galleries and art museums around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Must-see at ambiente frankfurt housewares show.

The upcoming Ambiente Frankfurt, better known to all of us in the US as the Frankfurt housewares show, will host 4,500 exhibitors over four days. To see them all you’d have to stop by 1,125 booths each day. But there is one section of the show that operates on a much smaller scale.

There are just eight participants in A MANO, a group of artisans producing high-grade hand-made goods – a must-see at Ambiente, and, I expect, a much needed relief from the slick, mass production of the rest of the consumer goods at the show. Here are three standouts from the bunch – the others are so small-scale they don’t have websites, so you’ll have to see those for yourself.

Atelier Berthold Hoffman, Germany (image above)

Located in Nuremburg since 1985, Hoffman specializes in cast iron cooking pots and gorgeous silverware.

Ingrid Donhauser Glaswerkstatt, Germany

Located in the Bavarian Forest, Donhauser make hand-blown, free form glass objects. mostly brightly colored bowls and cups but also intricately worked vases.

TWO PEOPLE, Poland

Though their website doesn’t work in English (and only barely seems to work in Polish), from what I can tell from the images, their ceramics seem to be a mix of traditional Polish and Japanese motifs.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the birth of the American Studio Glass movement, the Chrysler Museum of Art and the Chrysler Museum Glass Studio will present a year-long series of exhibitions and live demonstrations featuring eight internationally known artists. The Visiting Artist Series will include a special exhibition of selected work by each artist in the Museum along with a week of live public demonstrations in the Glass Studio.

The series will provide a range of educational programs on the various techniques, histories, and artistic concepts explored in glass. Audiences will enjoy exciting demonstrations and chances to meet the artists, and the companion exhibitions will enhance visitors’ appreciation of contemporary glass.
