More information
Turn off the lights when you leave a room. Turn down the heat. Don’t waste gas by idling your car. These and more tips to save energy and help the environment are second nature to most people by now. Yet many still wonder: I’m just one person. What can I do to fight global warming? Earth Hour began with this very question.

Sidney said, “On March 31, 2007, 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses turned off their lights for one hour,” the Earth Hour website proudly proclaims. This marked a reported decrease of 10.2% in Sydney’s energy use in that hour, “…the equivalent of taking 48,000 cars off the road for a year.”

The movement grew
Global warming is big news, and a project as big as Earth Hour quickly drew attention.

People from anywhere in the world are encouraged to sign up, and specific activities and groups will be organized to “ring in” Earth Hour from 8:00-9:00 p.m. in most major cities on March 29 including:

* Adelaide
* Atlanta
* Bangkok
* Brisbane
* Canberra
* Chicago
* Christchurch
* Copenhagen
* Dublin
* Manila
* Melbourne
* Montreal
* Odense
* Ottawa
* Perth
* Phoenix
* San Francisco
* Suva
* Sydney
* Tel Aviv
* Toronto
* Vancouver

Check the website for time and details in your city on earthhour.org

Other objectives
The Earth Hour organizers recognize that one hour annually is “a symbol” rather than an action that will end global warming. Their extended goals include educating the public about simple steps that can reduce energy consumption and climate change, and taking part in a year-long initiative.

I too really admire this post. It’s great to see people’s eyes opening. Hopefully the green movement will just continue to blossom.

I live in NYC, so I see plenty of people with seemingly zero concern for their environment….I found this website today where you can get eco-friendly products (mainly organic hemp bags and SIGG water bottles). http://www.ecobags.com/
I think people need to start on these small personal levels (like getting a recycled bag, or shutting their car engine off) in order to “infect” others with the same behaviors…especially their children who will follow by example…anyway…I don’t see NYC on the list of cities for earthhour…

i remember the people standing on the corners with candles. it was not a very nice evening and you had to huddle in a corner to keep out of the wind.

this year i will be armed with my candle!

T, Dutch, Barbara glad to hear you are in!

Thank you for reminding me. I too remember the people with the candles. At that time there was very little info and though I knew what the candles meant it had more entertainment value than message. This year will be different for many.

It’s so great to see this movement being taken up by cities and people around the globe. As an Aussie, it makes me very proud! Next steps are to have move people involved, and to have their new actions become habits that last for longer than one hour each year.

And thanks for DA’s prompt to promote this through the blogsphere.

Thanks for this great post, just to let you know that in Tel Aviv, Israel, the power-off hour went great, some 80% of all apt turned electricity off and the city looked dark. I was walking in HaYarkon park and it was dark as well, felt like I was walking in a forest…I hope next year 100% will participate…see ya all in Israel…
